Microsoft has confirmed its decision to proceed with the second phase of construction for the data center complex located in Vihti, Espoo, and Kirkkonummi. Construction on the second phase is scheduled to begin as early as 2026.

The multi-year project has progressed according to plan. The data centers will be built on three campuses in several phases, and their commissioning and the expansion of computing capacity will also be carried out in phases. Construction work for the first phase began in late 2024, and the work is expected to be completed around the turn of the year 2026–2027. Preparations for commissioning will begin after the construction phase. Further details regarding commissioning will be provided separately at a later date.

Construction work on the data center complex across three locations currently employs over 3,500 people and will employ approximately 4,500 people in June 2026. At the peak of construction, the project will employ as many as 7,500 people. Once the first phase is complete, the operation of the data centers will employ approximately 50 people in each building on the campuses.

“It has been wonderful to follow the progress of Microsoft’s data center complex from the zoning phase to the present day and its transition now to the next construction phase. Our collaboration with Microsoft has been excellent at every stage of the project. This is the largest corporate investment in Vihti’s history, and its significance for our municipality’s development cannot be overstated,” says Erkki Eerola, Mayor of Vihti.
