One-Hour Turku Rail Link became part of the new government programme, and the new train connection between Helsinki and Turku is becoming a reality. Including this project in the government programme will ensure that the railway project, which is important for Vihti and all the other municipalities along the railway line, will proceed as planned.
"Turku One-Hour Rail Link will create a single employment area for 1.5 million people in southern Finland, which will boost the economic growth of the municipalities along the railway line and of Finland as a whole," says Erkki Eerola, Mayor of the municipality.
"One-Hour Turku Rail Link will connect Vihti even more closely to the employment area of the capital region and Southwest Finland. In recent years, we have done a lot of work to develop the future station area and the South Nummela area. The next important step is to secure maximum CEF funding for the project from the European Union," says Eerola.
After the current planning phase, construction will start on the Espoo-Lohja and Salo-Kupittaa routes.
"The technical aspects of the route plans will be finalised this year. At the same time, we will continue to work with our owners, the state and the municipalities and cities along the line, to define the milestones for the implementation phase," says Pekka Ottavainen, Managing Director of Turun Tunnin Juna Oy, in a company press release.
Investments in railways build sustainable urban infrastructure and support climate work, as trains become a viable alternative to cars for an increasing number of people living along the railway line. The construction of One-Hour Turku Rail Link will make the journey between Turku and Helsinki comparable to travelling within the capital region, timewise.
