Nummela Airport is the first airport in the world to introduce an automatic monitoring system. The system detects and warns of obstacles in the runway area.

The CAMARS3 (Combitech Autonomous Multipurpose Airport Remote Sensing Safety System) system, developed by Saab and its subsidiary Combitech Ab and Finnish safety solutions provider Certego Oy, was presented on Friday 6 August in Saab's air show pavilion at the Helsinki Kaivopuisto air show area.

"Today, history of flying and air travel has been made. Here in Vihti, we are proud of Nummela Airport, a very important landmark for the municipality, and now we can be proud of our airport in even more ways," said Erkki Eerola, Mayor of Vihti, at the event organised by Saab and Certego.

"Nummela Airport, which turns 81 years old this autumn, is a great place for aviation enthusiasts. The airport is being actively developed and is excellently located close to the capital region. As aviation technology develops and renewable fuels and electrical technology become more widespread, for example, only the sky is the limit – literally," Eerola continued.

The automated monitoring system improves airport safety by detecting obstacles on the runway or other defined areas with its radar and, if an obstacle is detected, triggering a warning that can be seen and heard on the ground and in the air.

"Safety is a must in aviation, and the new monitoring system will make Nummela Airport an even safer place to fly. We expect that the automatic airport monitoring system will help keep outsiders away from the airport and runways, and thus ensure the safety of our landing aircraft," said Tom Arppe, Chairman of the Nummela Airport Association, summing up the benefits of the new system.

Once again, congratulations to the world's first automatically monitored airport in Vihti's Nummela!
